Mr. Stav utilizes the 4 step
GUIDED MATH technique.
Step 1:
Mr. Stav will teach a formal lesson to the class
Step 2:
Each student will complete 5 intentional centres
-
Math Journal - Students complete a procedural writing piece explaining how to do that curriculum expectation.
-
Math Game - Mr. Stav has created custom games for each expectation that help students practice simpler "knowledge & understanding" questions.
-
*Guided* - Mr. Stav will give his undivided attention to 4-5 students at a time. Helping them better understand the expectation and strategies needed to be successful. Every student will get a chance to sit with Mr. Stav
-
Independent Work - Students will complete a practice worksheet that features higher level questions. These types of questions will be seen on the quizzes, and on EQAO in grade 9.
-
Tech - Students will interact with the expectation online in an intentional and fun game or activity

Step 3:
Students will have a period to decide to re-try a centre, complete unfinished work, or sit with Mr. Stav to ask any questions that have come up during any of their centres in preparation for the quiz.

Step 4:
Students will demonstrate their understanding on a short quiz
Mr. Stav gathers 4 marks for each expectation:

1. Math Journal:
- Students will follow a rubric to demonstrate a higher level of proficiency
- They will use complete sentences
- They will use the keywords from our lesson (featured on our math wall in class)
- They will use an example
2. Guided Table:
- Mr. Stav will observationally get to see how each student is understanding the concept

3. Independent Work:
- This is a simple completion mark.
- Students must complete the entire 2 sided handout
- Students must check their answers online before handing it in. Answers are online at MrStav.ca/math

4. Quiz/ Exit Ticket:
- Students will complete a short quiz that specifically targets the curriculum expectation.
- This quiz can be re-taken once a student has completed their math journal and independent work and has attended a "Math-Help Session" with Mr. Stav outside of classroom time.
